Unser Ausstellungs-Stand in Anaheim

Noch nie war die PRAKLA-SEISMOS auf einer SEGTagung so stark vertreten wie in diesem Jahr in Anaheim, das durch das international bekannte Disneyland Berühmtheit erlangte. Anaheim liegt 40 km südöstlich von Los Angeles in Kalifornien, wo im Dezember immer noch sommerliche Temperaturen herrschen. Diese für die Tagung angenehmen Begleitumstände dürften für die Geschäftsleitung aber kaum der Grund gewesen sein, die Teilnehmerzahl so hoch festzusetzen. Vielmehr war PRAKLA-SEISMOS erstmals mit einem Stand auf der parallel zur Tagung stattfindenden Ausstellung (ca. 80 Aussteller) vertreten, der in der Mitte der Halle in der Nähe des Kaffee-Standes lag. Der reihum gehende Stand-Dienst von zwei Mitarbeitern mußte oft verstärkt werden, um jedem Besucher die gewünschte Aufmerksamkeit schenken zu können. Auf 22 Tafeln demonstrierte PRAKLA-SEISMOS, daß sie als wohl einzige Firma der Welt noch die ganze Breite der angewandten Geophysik anbietet:			42nd. Annual International Meeting of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists November 26.-30. 1972 Never before at a SEG Meeting had there been such a strong PRAKLA-SEISMOS presence as this year at Anaheim which by way of its internationally known Disneyland has become world famous. Anaheim is situated 40 km to the South East of Los Angeles in California where even in December warm temperatures prevail. These pleasent conditions at a meeting were for the management surely not the reason to include so large a number of participants. It was rather due to the fact that PRAKLA-SEISMOS was for the first time present with a booth at an exhibition (approximately 80 exhibitors) taking place parallel to the meeting ; our booth in the center of the hall, near the coffee shop, seemed to be ' placed rather favourably. The booth staff of two collaegues had to be reinforced often to give proper attention to all the visitors. On 22 boards PRAKLA-SEISMOS demonstrated that they were possibly the only company in the world which still pursues the whole of applied geophysics:

Etwa 1400 Prospekte der Ausgaben Data Processing, Offshore Geophysics und Shallow Water Surveys wurden von Besuchern mitgenommen. 110 Interessenten äußerten auf ausgelegten Karten schriftlich den Wunsch, neu in die Bezieher-Kartei von Report und Prospekten aufgenommen zu werden. Besonderes Interesse erregten die Tafeln Saltdome Undershooting, 3-dimensionale Migration, Plotting (mit dem neuen Raster-Plotter für das Area Plotting). Die Zahl der ca. 1600 offiziell registrierten Teilnehmer (Begleitpersonen nicht eingerechnet) war nicht so groß wie 1971 in Houston, was Kenner der amerikanischen Verhältnisse auf folgende 2 Punkte zurückführen: 1. Die geophysikalische Aktivität ist in Kalifornien recht gering geworden -im Gegensatz zu Houston, wo sich eine immer größere Konzentration zeigt. 2. Die nächste SEG-Tagung findet vom 21 .-25. Oktober 1973 in Mexiko-City statt. Das Vortragsprogramm mit insgesamt 139 Vorträgen war während der 4 Sitzungstage in die 5 Themenkreise			Approximately 1400 prospectuses dealing with Data Processing, Offshore Geophysics, and Shallow Water Surveys were collected by the visitors. 110 interested participants expressed their desire, on laid-out cards, to be entered in the mailing list for the Report and prospectuses. Special interest was generated by the boards "Salt dome Undershooting", "3-Dimensional Migration", "Plotting" (using the new raster-plotter for area plotting). The number of the approximately 1600 registered participants (not counting guests) was not as large as in Houston in 1971, probably due to the following two points: 1. Geophysical activity has much declined in California; in opposition to Houston, where there is an ever increasing trend towards concentration. 2. The next SEG-Meeting will be held on October 21 . to 25., 1973 in Mexico City. The papers presented, including 139 contributions, were during the four-day meeting divided-up into 5 subject fields

Exploration System tor Offshore Manganese Nodule Deposits
In diesem Vortrag wurde gesagt, daß bei der heute interessant werdenden Manganknollen-Suche auf dem Meeresboden die Explorationsmethoden nicht nur von der Geophysik und Geologie, sondern auch von Ozeanologie und Biologie beeinflußt werden. Neben Seismik und Magnetik werden u. a. auch Unterwasserfernsehen, Echolotungen und Probenahmen vom Meeresgrund durchgeführt. Zusammen mit den Navigationsdaten werden die Daten der Messungen und der Analysen (z. T. automatische Analysen der Fernsehbilder in Bezug auf Manganknollenverbreitung, z. T. nachträgliche chemische und physikalische Analysen der Proben) auf dem Schiff von einem Daten-Logger gesammelt und zur späteren Auswertung wie auch zur laufenden Bestimmung eines optimalen Profilnetzes benutzt. Von PRAKLA-SEISMOS wurde hierfür das integrierte Navigations-und Datenerfassungssystem (INDAS) entwickelt. Bei den ersten Messungen im Pazifischen Ozean wurden damit sehr hohe Genauigkeiten erzielt.			This report describes that exploration methods in the search for manganese nodules on the sea-floor, now gaining momentum, do not only depend on .the application of geophysics and geology, but also on oceanography and biology. Besides seismic methods and magnetics, underwater television, echo soundings and sampling of the sea floor are carried out. Together, with the navigational data and the data arising out of above surveys and analysis, (in part, automatie analysis of underwater TV-pictures with respect to manganese nodule distribution, i. e. pattern recognition; in part, subsequent chemical and physical analysis of the sampies) are stored on a shipboard computer and used for later interpretation as weil as the determination of an optimal survey grid. PRAKLASEISMOS developed for this purpose the Integrated Navigation and Data collection System (INDAS). Highly accurate results have been achieved using this system at preliminary trials on site in the Pacific Ocean.

Die Wichtigkeit der Ozeanography wurde auch unterstrichen durch ein Ozeanographie Luncheon (Mittagessen mit Plenarvortrag). An den anderen 3 Tagen gab es neben einem Kickoff Luncheon ein Mining Luncheon mit dem Thema Umweltverschmutzung und ein Geothermal Luncheon. Der Geothermik waren auch die Geothermal Symposien I und 11 gewidmet, die aufzeigten, welche ungeheuren Energiemengen der Menschheit zur Verfügung stehen, wenn es gelingt, heißes Wasser oder Dampf aus Tiefen von 1-10 km zu fördern. Neben den bekannten InfrarotKartierungen und geochemischen Verfahren sind auch Versuche mit Geoelektrik und Messungen von seismischem Noise zur Aufspürung geothermischer Lagerstätten unternommen worden. Bei den Fachvorträgen fiel auf, daß in der Datenverarbeitung seismischer Messungen automatische I nterpretationsprogramme (bzw. Hilfsprogramme, wie z. B. Geschwindigkeitsanalysen) in den Vordergrund rücken ; bezeichnenderweise wurde über Migration jedoch nicht gesprochen. Kleincomputer und rechnergestützte Feldapparaturen werden leistungsfähiger. Erwähnung verdient noch die Sitzung Numerical Modelling Workshop, wobei sich hinter dem Wort Workshop verbirgt, daß hier der Hörer insofern zur Mitarbeit aufgerufen wird, als er Zwischenfragen und -bemerkungen anbringen soll. Vielleicht wird die dabei entfachte Spontaneität auf andere Tagungen abfärben. Nach Entrichtung einer Tagesgebühr von 30 Dollar erhielt jeder Teilnehmer Freitickets für die gesellschaftlichen Veranstaltungen, die Icebreaker-Cocktail-Party "California Style" am Vorabend der Eröffnung, das Kickoff Luncheon (Antritts-Mittagessen) am Eröffnungstag und den Breakfast-Dance am Abend des vorletzten Tages.			The importance of oceanography was also underlined at an Oceanographic Luncheon (lunch and general meeting). On the remaining 3 days there were, besides the "Kick-off Luncheon", a Mining Luncheon on the subject of world pollution, and a Geothermal Luncheon. The Geothermal Symposia land II were also dedicated to geothermics; these symposia indicated the immense amounts of energy available to mankind if it would be able to convey hot water or steam from depths of one to 10 km. Apart from the well-known infrared cartography and geochemical methods, trial surveys have been carried out using geoelectrics and measurements of seismic noise to locate new geothermal sourees. At the sessions it was noticeable that in data processing of seismic surveys, automatie interpretation programs (as weil as assessory programs, such as velocity analysis) have come to the fore; while, surprisingly, migration was not discussed. It was reported that small computers and computerassisted field instruments increased in performance. One should also mention the Numerical Modelling Workshop meeting, where here the word Workshop means that listeners are asked to contribute, to ask questions and comment on these. Perhaps such spontaneous discussion will spill over onto other meetings. Each participant received free tickets, after the payment of a daily fee of $ 30, for any of the social events, such as the Icebraker Cocktail Party, "California"-style, on the evening before openingday, the Kick-off Luncheon on opening day, and the Breakfast-Dance on the evening of the second-Iast day.

Während das Kickoff Luncheon ca. 1500 Gäste in der Sporthalle des hochmodernen Convention-Centers vereinigte, fanden die beiden anderen Veranstaltungen mit sicherlich je 2000 Menschen in den Ballräumen des eleganten Disneyland-Hotels statt. Flotte Unterhaltungsmusik und unbegrenzte Mengen hervorragender californischer Rot-, Weiß-und Schaumweine am Sonntag und zündende Tanzmusik am Mittwoch bestimmten das Klima der stilvollen Abende ; nur das amerikanische Frühstück zum Ausgang des Tanzabends war für uns Deutsche ungewohnt, hatte aber den Reiz des Originellen. Bei der Fülle des offiziell Gebotenen war nur noch wenig Zeit für einen Blick in die Umgebung. Aber für das Disneyland, nur 500 m vom Convention-Center entfernt, hat gewiß jeder einen halben Tag geopfert. Wer möchte sich auch nachsagen lassen, in Anaheim gewesen zu sein, und Adventure-Land, Fantasy-Land und Tomorrow-Land nicht zu kennen, weder in der Allwegbahn noch im SantaFee-Expreß, der Pferdebahn oder im U-Boot gefahren zu sein. In etwas weiterer Entfernung lockten Ziele wie Los Angeles, Hollywood und dahinter 2000-3000 m hohe Berge, Longbeach mit der zum Baden einladenden Pazifikküste, Palmsprings und die Wüste oder San Diego, die nahe Grenze nach Mexico, das in diesem Jahr Gastland für die SEG-Tagung sein wird.			While the Kick-off Luncheon united about 1500 guests in the sports hall of the highly modern convention centre, were the other two events, each with some 2000 people, held in the ball-rooms of the elegant Disneyland Hotel. Entertaining music and unlimited quantities of excellent Californian red and white wines, as weil as Champagne on Sunday, and gay dancing music on Wednesday, determined the style of these evenings. Only the American Breakfast, at the conclusion of the dance was for us Germans somewhat unfamiliar, though quite original. With such a full program offered there was but little time to look at the local attractions; Disneyland, however, only 500 m from the convention centre, each one of us managed to sacrifice at l!;last half a day. Who would like to have one say to have been in Anaheim and not to have seen Adventure-Land, Fantasy-Land or Tomorrow-Land, nor have driven on the Monorail, the Santa-Fe-Express; been to the horse-racing rink, or gone down in a submarine. Other sights lured at somewhat greater distances, like Los Angeles, Hollywood, with 2000 to 3000 m high mountains behind, Long Beach with its to a dip inviting Pacific coast, Palm Springs and the desert, or San Diego near the border to Mexico, which this year will be host country to the SEG-Meeting.
